Travelling to another country to learn a foreign language? For many of us, this offers a once in a lifetime experience that ranks right up there on the bucket list of big life dreams.
So, how do you maximise every moment of this unique opportunity? Here’s how to make the most of your Australian study experience.
Practise, practise, practise
Technically, the objective of studying in Australia is to learn English, and that involves a whole lot of practise both inside and outside of the classroom.
The more you practise, the sooner you will acquire and improve your English skills.
So, put your nerves aside and practise the language at every opportunity - whether that’s speaking English at your local cafe, engaging in everyday conversation at the shops, watching English speaking television shows, or listening to a podcast in English.
Immerse yourself in the culture
While the aim of the game might be to learn the language, studying in a foreign country is also about experiencing a whole new culture.
Seize the opportunity and dive in by networking, meeting new people and saying yes to new experiences.
Whether it’s going to the beach, enjoying a barbecue, or eating out with friends, there’s so much to enjoy when it comes to Australia’s laid back culture.
Get social and forge friendship
Studying in a foreign country offers the opportunity to forge friendships that can last a lifetime.
If you really want to embrace that opportunity, set any shyness aside and put yourself out there in a bid to connect with and meet new people.
This might include:
- Socialising with fellow students and peers
- Joining social clubs
- Attending activities and events
- Socialising with your work colleagues
- Striking up conversations
- Volunteering
Go travelling and see the sights
Australia’s a big country and there’s so much to see and do. In fact, exploring Australia is half the fun of studying here, making it an opportunity not to be missed.
Draw up a list of all the things you hope to see while studying in Australia, then make a plan to tick as many off that list as you can.
Also take the time to talk with other students, travellers and locals about the best things to see and do while you’re here.
Sometimes, the most memorable attractions aren’t the big ticket tourism icons that instantly spring to mind.
They might just be the hidden gem locations that only the locals and other experienced travellers happen to know.
Be open to opportunities
One of the most exciting things about studying in and exploring a new country is that you’re well outside your comfort zone and almost anything seems possible.
Be open to new opportunities as you never know where they might lead. Perhaps they’ll involve adventures that exceed your wildest dreams, relationships that make an indelible imprint on you, or further study and career opportunities that set your life on a whole new trajectory.
