Certificate II in Animal Care

Nationally Recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET)

This course provides students with the skills and knowledge for entry-level positions in various animal care settings, including animal shelters, veterinary clinics, pet grooming services, and wildlife care facilities.

Work Placement

Workplace-based applicants are required to have a minimum of 15 hours of paid employment in an approved vet clinic. 

General public and VDSS cohorts are required to complete 40 hours of practical placement, which can be completed in one or more animal care facilities over the duration of the course.

Entry requirements

Domestic Students

  • There are no mandated entry requirements.
  • Complete a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online test to ensure the required literacy & numeracy levels for the course are met.
  • Undertake a Pre-training Review by interview to ensure the course suits their needs and aspirations, and that they are likely to complete the course successfully.
  • Prospective Traineeship or Apprenticeship students are required to apply through an Apprenticeship Network Provider with their employer to organise their apprenticeship contract before applying for this course.
  • Prospective VDSS students are required to apply through their School's VET Coordinator or Careers Advisor.
  • Workplace-based applicants are required to have a minimum of 15 hours of paid employment in an approved vet clinic.
  • Vet Tech: Bachelor of Veterinary Technology students will have their suitability determined by CSU - a minimum ATAR of 70 is required.
