Nationally Recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET)The Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR30620) prepares learners for entry-level roles as vehicle service technicians or vehicle technicians in the automotive retail, service, and repair industry.
This qualification develops the essential technical skills required to inspect, service, diagnose, and repair light vehicle engines, fuel systems, braking systems, steering and suspension systems, electrical and ignition systems, and emission control systems. Learners also build strong foundations in diagnostic testing, workplace communication, and environmental and safety practices.
Delivered through a blended model, the course combines face-to-face classroom learning, practical workshop training in a fully equipped automotive workshop, and required online learning activities. This approach supports both theoretical understanding and real-world, hands-on capability development.
On successful completion, graduates may seek employment in the automotive industry or progress to further study, including Certificate IV automotive qualifications, subject to entry requirements.
What You’ll Learn
This course provides the essential training required to work as a light vehicle mechanic. Key learning outcomes include:
- Servicing and repairing light vehicle engines and fuel systems
- Diagnosing and repairing braking, steering, and suspension systems
- Testing and repairing basic automotive electrical circuits
- Diagnosing ignition, starting, and charging systems
- Developing and applying diagnostic test strategies
- Carrying out vehicle servicing operations and safety inspections
- Using and maintaining automotive tools and measuring equipment
- Applying workplace health and safety and environmental best practices
- Communicating effectively in an automotive workplace
Graduates will be eligible to apply for an Unrestricted Electrician’s Licence (subject to additional workplace experience and assessment), and may continue to Certificate IV or licensing-level training.
Delivery and Assessment
- Face-to-face classes: Delivered at the Burwood campus
- Workshop training: Practical training and assessment at the Revesby workshop
- Online learning: Required learning activities completed via the student portal
- Trainer support: Ongoing guidance, feedback, and coaching from qualified trainers
Assessment methods include written knowledge assessments, practical demonstrations, and direct observation in the workshop.
Course Structure & Commitment
- Duration: 81 weeks (including term breaks)
- Study Load: Approx. 29 hours per week

◦ 9 hrs study and assessment preparation - Total Hours: 1,584 hours
The timetable is structured across 6 terms, with scheduled breaks and delivery aligned to unit sequencing and assessment requirements. A full training schedule is provided upon enrolment.
Licensing and Further Study
There are no licensing, legislative, or certification requirements attached to this qualification at the time of publication. Completion of the AUR30620 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology does not in itself grant a trade licence or statutory authorisation.
This qualification is recognised as a key trade-level outcome within the automotive retail, service, and repair industry and provides a strong foundation for employment as a vehicle service technician or vehicle technician.

Entry requirements
Domestic Students
- There are no mandated entry requirements.
To enrol, applicants must:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Have sound language and literacy skills equivalent to Year 10 English
- Have basic computer skills
- Have access to required resources (see below)
There are no formal prerequisites.
South Sydney College (SSC) may require you to complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills evaluation. This helps us understand your learning needs and ensure you receive the right support to succeed in your course.
Resources Required
Students must provide or have access to:
- A laptop with basic document software and internet access
- Personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, steel-capped boots, and protective gloves
- A basic mechanic’s hand tool kit suitable for workshop activities
